The Story
of One Man’s Struggle for Fame!
Jackie Robinson
portrays himself in this movie which chronicles his
life from UCLA to his breakthrough as the first black
man to play baseball in the major leagues.
While playing
baseball with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro
National League he was signed to a major leaguebaseball
contract by Brooklyn Dodger general manager Branch Rickey
and played with their Montreal farm team in 1946. Brought
up to the Dodgers in 1947, Robinson hit 297, led the
league in stolen bases (29), scored 125 runs and was
named Rookie of the Year as the Dodgers won their first
pennant since 1941. As the first black player in the
majors, Robinson had to control his fiery temper in
the face of continual racial slurs from both the crowds
and the players. The Dodgers won six National League
pennants during his career. Retiring from the game in
1956, Jackie Robinson became the first black player
to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame when enshrined
in 1962.
